Did they disappear because they’re
susceptible to vandalism? Or because they’re a sensible, more practical
alternative to a hard topper and ate into more profitable accessory sales? Or are Americans just too lazy to fold something up when they’re not using them? Are they safety hazard? I demand answers!

I want to say yes to all of the above. I did see a canvas cap on a work truck the other day, maybe Friday or
Saturday. I am now wondering if it was custom made to go over the big diamond plate tool boxes on the sides?

That’s amazing. I’ve never seen one on something made after the 1980s.

People have less tolerance for discomfort of any kind these days, less willing to put up with road noise, heat/cold, lack of security, etc.

It kind of makes sense, soft tonneau covers are hugely popular because they can cover the bed and be easily folded up for larger loads. A soft topper is a taller version of that idea.
I’ve only seen a few of them out in the wild, but I wouldn’t be surprised if soft toppers are the next big accessory.

I keep seeing more and more of them...though that still only adds up to a fraction of a percent.

...unless there’s enough other value to offset those.

There’s definitely a subset of the population that’s still ok with discomfort, but in general the bar has been raised. Canvas used to be top of the line in weather protection, but it’s not anymore.
